Ischgl is a small town in the Tyrol state of Austria, also known as the "Ibiza of the Alps". Ischgl is one of the most prominent and largest ski resorts in the Alps. It is particularly known for its nightlife and the hosting of several events and concerts with some of the most famous popstars of the world.
In 2020, however, Ischgl attracted great attention for having been a hub for several hundred infections from the coronavirus
epidemic due to a new strain of coronavirus, known as
SARS-CoV-2, which causes the respiratory illness known as
COVID-19. Many of these infections were caught by tourists from Germany and from Nordic countries, contributing to the spread of the coronavirus throughout Europe. The problem was further exhacerbated by the fact that the ski resort and bars in the area did not close immediately notwithstanding warnings from health authorities, but remained open in order to avoid economic loss due to early closure of the skiing season.
The correct pronunciation of Ischgl in German is
Eesh-luh. Ischgl may seem difficult to pronounce due to its preponderance of subsequent consonants, but it is quite simple. The "I" sounds like an -ee sound. Meanwhile, the "sch" produces an English "sh" sound and the "g" in Ischgl is not pronounced. The "L" instead is pronounced with a familiar -luh sound, like a child would pronounce it when learning how the letters of the alphabet sound.
