How many people are native Chinese speakers?

Chinese is a group of hundreds of languages known as Sinitic languages. The most spoken of Chinese languages is Mandarin and it is the official language of China, but is also spoken in Taiwan, Singapore, and Myanmar. Mandarin counts around 918 million native speakers, while about 1.2 billion people natively speak some form of Chinese.

Mandarin is the second most spoken language in the world. A total of about 1.116 billion people speak Chinese, with nearly 199 million speakers who speak Mandarin as a second language.

Origins of Chinese

Mandarin began developing as the “official speech” of China from the 14th century onwards, with the prevalent versions based on Nanjing and then Beijing dialect. It has especially risen to prominence from the founding of the Republic of China in 1912 with increasing numbers of speakers across mainland China. Around 70% of the population now speaks some form of dialect that derives from Mandarin.
