On Sunday, April 9th, we will be celebrating Easter. Happy Easter, then, but also Buona Pasqua, Joyeuses Pâques, Feliz Pascua, Vrolijk Pasen, Kellemes Husveti Unnepeket… While we wish you Happy Easter in all languages, listen to the correct pronunciations of every word (clicking the blue words), find out why we celebrate it and how Easter day is calculated.

What do we celebrate at Easter?

Easter is the most important Christian holiday because it celebrates the resurrection of Jesus, which happened on the third day after he died on the cross, according to the Gospels. Easter is considered a more significant holiday than Christmas because, as Pope Francis stated, “it is the feast of our salvation”.

When is Easter in 2023?

In 2023, Holy Easter will be on Sunday, 9 April.

How is the Easter day calculated?

To calculate the day on which Easter will fall, we follow the rule established at the Council of Nicaea (an ancient city that has now become İznik, in Turkey), held in 325 AD. The assembly was convened by Emperor Constantine I and was attended by 300 bishops from all the provinces of the Roman Empire. They established that Easter would be celebrated on the Sunday following the first full moon of the Spring equinox.
