Mathematician, physicist, astronomer, and philosopher. He collaborated with Denis Diderot to the editing of the Encyclopaedia, or a Systematic Dictionary of the Sciences, Arts, and Crafts (Encyclopédie, ou dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers)
