A route is a way or a road that is traveled, but it can also mean an itinerary of stops, for example, the itinerary of a bus with stops is a route.
The word route derives from the French word route, which means road or path.
The correct pronunciation of route in the UK is root. The American pronunciation of route, however, follows both the British English version, and an alternative version, pronounced as raut.
The British pronunciation of route is the same as the French pronunciation of route.
