A route is a way or a road that is traveled, but it can also mean an itinerary of stops, for example the itenarary of a bus with stops is a route.
The word route derives from the French word
route, which means road or path.
The correct pronunciation of route in the US is both
root and
raut. These two ways to pronounce route are interchangeable for both the noun and the verb form. The original pronunciation of route was
root, which is the same as the
French pronunciation of route. The reason that both pronunciations exist is because, in English words spelled with an "ou", such as "out" produce an "ou" sound, leading to confusion of how route should be pronounced. Consequently, this has led to confusion over the correct pronunciation of router as well.
