Wuhan is a city in China that is the capital of the Hubei province. Wuhan is mostly known for being where the outbreak of an epidemic due to a new strain of coronavirus, known as SARS-CoV-2, which causes the respiratory illness known as COVID-19. Wuhan has a population of 11 million and was recognized as a manufacturing hub, but has also been recently recognized as a designated Creative City by UNESCO.
The name Wuhan is a portmanteau (which is the blend of two or more words) of Wuchang and Hankou, two cities that were merged, along with Hanyang, to create the city of Wuhan.
The correct pronunciation of Wuhan in Chinese is Woo-hahn. While the tone of how you pronounce Wuhan is difficult to replicate for a non-native speaker, a good approximation can be achieved. It is important to extend the pronunciation of the "u", so as to pronounce it with an extended -oo sound. Successively, you must pose particular stress on the second syllable, -hahn. Furthermore, the "a" has an open "ah" sound and the "n" must be particularly incisive.
