Hubei is a province in Central China, whose capital is the infamous
Wuhan. The Hubei province counts nearly 60 million residents. Hubei rose to international prominence for the outbreak of an
epidemic due to a new strain of coronavirus, known as
SARS-CoV-2, which causes the respiratory illness known as
COVID-19. From Wuhan, the outbreak spread to the province of Hubei and further expanded to the rest of the world, causing a global
pandemic.
The name Hubei literally means, "north of the lake", in reference to its position in regard to the Dongting Lake and was formerly known as Hupeh.
