How to pronounce
Černobyl (Chernobyl)

Chernobyl, in the English transliteration, is a city north of Kyiv, in Ukraine, that was the location of the biggest nuclear accident in history. The accident occurred in 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Because of the long-term health effects of nuclear radiation, it is extremely difficult to quantify how many people died because of the event or whose life was effectively compromised.
The name Chernobyl derives from the Ukrainian word for wormwood or Artemisia Vulgaris.
The correct pronunciation of Chernobyl in Ukrainian can be phonetically written as Chur-noh-bil. It is important to note that the "o" in -noh should be pronounced as more open and abbreviated than the "o" in the word "no".
It is also worth mentioning that the Russian pronunciation is very similar to the Ukrainian one, but given that Chernobyl is in Ukraine, it is preferable to use a Ukrainian pronunciation.
