Oregon is a state in the United States on the West Coast, above
California and below
Washington State. Oregon's capital city is
Salem, which is the second most populous city behind Portland.
The origin of Oregon's name is heavily disputed amongst experts. Some say it derives from the Spanish name
orejón that may have been given by early Spanish explorers. Others say it derived from the
oregano plant, which grows in the southern part of the region.
The correct pronunciation of Oregon in English is
Orr-ih-guhn. The stress on the word must be pronounced on the first syllable, -Orr. The "eg" in Oregon is pronounced with an -ih sound rather than an "e". The last syllable, -guhn, is pronounced with a sound that is akin to a "g'n" with the "e" that sounds elided.
