Ikea is a Swedish company and brand that designs and manufactures ready-to-assemble home furniture, accessories and kitchen appliances. The company was founded in 1943 by Ingvar Kamprad. Ikea is now worth upward of 40 billion dollars and is the largest furniture retailer in the world.
The name Ikea derives from the founder's initials Ingvar Kamprad (IK), Elmtaryd (E), the name of the family farm where he was born and his hometown, named Agunnaryd (A), thus forming IKEA.
In English, the name Ikea is often pronounced as eye-kee-ah.
