
Lesya Ukrainka was a Ukrainian writer, feminist and political activist. Ukrainka is considered one of the most important figures in Ukrainian literature. As a writer she is most known for her poems and plays proclaiming freedom and independence for Ukraine.
Her real name was Larysa Petrivna Kosach-Kvitka, but she used the pseudonym Lesya Ukrainka because at the time, in the Russian Empire, Ukrainian language publications were forbidden. Ukrainka literally means Ukrainian woman in the Ukrainian language.
