Ayn Rand - Ayn Rand was a Russian-American novelist and philosopher. Rand was born in Russia as Alisa Zinov'yevna Rosenbaum and received American citizenship in 1931. Around the age of 20 she began writing under the pen name Ayn Rand. Her best-known works are the novels The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged. Through her novels and later non-fiction works, Rand developed her philosophical system that she named objectivism, which advocated ethical egoism, individual rights and laissez-faire capitalism. While the work of Ayn Rand has strongly resonated throughout American conservatism and libertarianism, it has been either disregarded or rejected by academics, including most libertarian philosophers.
The correct pronunciation of Ayn Rand is Eyen Rand. Her first name, Ayn, is not pronounced as you would pronounce the name "Ann". Rather, it begins with the letters "ay", which are pronounced like the word "eye", after which you must add an "n".
